Mexican food is always a crowd pleaser. Serving Mexican food and drinks at a Mexico-themed birthday party will make the celebration even more memorable. This list of savory Mexican foods features simple, party-friendly eats. While some originated in Mexico, others transform traditional American dishes into south-of-the-border favorites. Many of these dishes can be made in advance, giving you more time to enjoy your margarita.
1. Chips and Dips. Corn tortilla chips alongside guacamole, salsa and bean dip are a must for any Mexican food party table. Also popular is chile con queso, a spicy, hot cheese dip.

2. Mini Tacos. Seek out small, soft corn tortillas. Fillings can include beans, cheese, fish or meats. You can pre-make the tacos or set up a taco bar where guests can make their own.

3. Chile Cheese Tarts. 1-inch pre-made appetizer pastry shells are the best thing that's happened to parties since the wine charm phenomenon. You can fill these bite-sized cups with any filling you can think of, savory or sweet. We suggest a combination of fresh green chiles and cheese. Depending on guests' preferences, you may adjust the heat accordingly.

4. Agua Fria. This refreshing drink can be made from almost any blended fruit. First, liquefy a fruit such as watermelon in the blender. Strain the mixture to eliminate seeds. Serve with a mint leaf garnish if you like.

5. Sliders Mexican Style. Try a spicy take on the slider phenomenon by adding salsa, cornmeal and pepper jack cheese to these much-loved miniature burgers.

6. Quesadillas. Tuck spinach and mushrooms with cheddar cheese between two flour tortillas and saute until brown. You can use smaller-sized tortillas for individual portions. If you're using 10-inch or larger tortillas, you may slice the quesadilla into smaller servings once cooked.

7. Chile Spiced Nuts. You'll find these spiced nuts on many bars throughout Mexico. Roast shelled, unsalted, blanched peanuts in vegetable oil in a skillet. When cool, mix in chile powder. You can add as much or as little as you like depending on your tolerance for heat. Salt nuts to taste and garnish with lime wedges. They can be stored for weeks in an airtight container.

8. Flan. This steamed caramel custard dessert has a creamy texture and is easy to make in advance. It can be served cold or at room temperature in small, individual-sized ramekins.

They are both tasty, nutritious and green! Is your family more of an egg breakfast family? Well, you've heard of Green Eggs and Ham, haven't you? Make your eggs with a couple drops of the good old green, food coloring that is. Prepare them as you normally would...scrambled, fried, over easy or sunny side up. There is another green egg idea for you...the Salsa Verde Omelet. Salsa Verde is green salsa! Now you need a green drink... Limeade is sure to be green enough. It's usually found in the freezer section of your food store. Mix equal amounts of Limeaid and Ginger Ale or 7 Up in a punch bowl. Scoop some Lime Sherbet into it and your Patty's Party Punch is ready to go. Then finally, there is always green beer...which requires some greener food coloring!

Celebrate Mardi Gras! This history rich festival makes for the perfect mid-winter party! With the dead of winter upon all of us, it's time to gather friends and family and get everyone out of their winter doldrums. Mardi Gras provides a fun and festive reason for a celebration! Mardi Gras season in the early centuries of Europe, ran from the end of Christmas to the beginning of Lent on the Christian calendar. It always began with the Feast of the Epiphany, the twelfth day after Christmas and ended with the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. It provided a last chance to eat, drink and be merry before the austerity of the Lenten season. Here in the United States, this celebration was introduced by the French and first celebrated along the Mississippi River, near what is now New Orleans. This origin is what has established the strong connection between New Orleans and Mardi Gras. In 2011 the official Mardi Gras festivities occur on Tuesday, March 8th, so you have plenty of time to start your own celebration planning.
So you've got some history... now here are some tips to help you plan your our own celebration. A Mardi Gras party is fun for all ages. It can be as much fun for the kids as it as for the adults. Adapt your fun and games according to the age of your guests! Our family has done this party for kids from 6 to 16 in addition to adults.

The official Mardi Gras colors are purple, green and gold representing justice, faith and power, as this was a festival rooted in both religion and monarchy. There has always been a King and Queen of Mardi Gras celebrations.. so let your party include a way to choose ones from among your guests. This can be done by seeing who collects the most Mardi Gras beads; gold coins, has the best costume or finds the Baby King, which is baked into the King cake. A King cake is a traditional dessert.

Invitations are abundant both online and in the stores. Party stores have all kinds of Mardi Gras decorations... so brighten your home with these traditional colors on tablecloths, paper goods and banners or wall décor. Buy a fun jazz CD or put together an I pod play list and let the music add to the ambiance. Don't forget to have tons of beads on hand so that you can bedeck all the guests.

Food for a Fat Tuesday party can be gumbo or jambalaya. Both of these are easy to make and always crowd pleasers. Any kind of shrimp or crab dip with some baguettes or French bread are welcomed appetizers. If this is an adult party you could make a Hurricane punch. Dessert should be the King Cake. This is a lengthy recipe, so my advice.. buy or order one! Just make sure if the Baby King doll is baked into it, you alert your guests. You don't need someone breaking a tooth as they take their first bite. Tradition says who ever finds the Baby King in their cake will receive a year of good luck! You could also make your own desserts and decorate with frostings and sugars in the festive purple and gold colors.

It's seldom you find food with such a deep history as a King Cake. This fabulous cinnamon roll-like cake gets its name from the biblical kings that came to honor Christ on Epiphany (The twelfth day after Christmas). The king cake season is from Epiphany Day or the Twelfth Night to Mardi Gras Day. This year, 2011 Mardi Gras Day falls on Tuesday, March 8. Mardi Gras Day or "Fat Tuesday" is the last day of the Carnival Season and it always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday (The first day of Lent).

The famous King's Cake was brought to the New Orleans area by colonist from France and Spain. New Orleans bakeries feature their own style in the variety of recipes... The most traditional is twisted or braided bread, very similar to brioche. This cake is then topped with sugary icing and decorated purple, green, and gold sugar, icing, and sprinkles. The purple, green, and gold are the traditional carnival colors. Purple meaning Justice, Green for Faith, and Gold standing for Power; these colors were chosen by the Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch Romanoff of Russia during a visit to New Orleans in 1872.

King Cakes in Southern Louisiana date back to the eighteenth century, but in more recent history some New Orleans bakeries have begun to add their own touches to the traditional king cakes by adding a variety of flavored fillings including; apple, blueberry, chocolate, lemon, pineapple, raspberry, bavarian cream, cherry, cream cheese, pecan praline or strawberry. Throughout history, each cake was said to have a small trinket, or "baby" hidden inside. A tradition from the Roman Empire placed a little bean inside; in 1870 this bean was replaced by a porcelain figurine and more recently a plastic baby. It was customarily said this bean, or figuring was to represent Baby Jesus. And tradition declares whoever "gets the baby or finds the figurine in their piece of king cake has the obligation to bring the next cake, or host the next carnival celebration.

Although many of us only picture the New Orleans style, colorful braided cake when we hear the term king cakes; traditionally they were not so. The French style king cake "La galette des Rois" meaning the cake or "wafer" of the Kings looks nothing like our kingcakes. The La galette des Rois is made of flaky puff pastry with a heavy center of frangipane. These French king's cakes also have a trinket hidden inside, but these figurines represent things resembling cartoon characters or even cars. Another twist on the known New Orleans style king cake is the Mexican, "La Rosca de Reyes" or "Roscon de Reyes" both meaning King Cake. The Rosca de Reyes is made in an oval shape with dried or candied fruit for decoration, commonly using figs or cherries. The customary figuring representing the Child Jesus is also followed in these Mexican king's cakes as well.

However it has become synonymous with the celebration of Irish lore and culture. The luck of the Irish and the Celtic mythology of fairies, also known as leprechauns, hiding their pots of gold has withstood the test of time! The wearing of the green and celebration of the shamrock just make for a naturally fun party that can be pulled together for minimum expense. So get started with your plans and enjoy the day!

Decide if you want to have a party for your kids, for your friends or for both! A party that includes your kids is great fun so don't rule it out. It can create some wonderful memories. Invitations can be made on the computer with lots of Irish clip art. Another clever way to invite your guests is to print your invitation out on an index card and attach it to a cardboard shamrock that can be found at the party stores. Then "ring and run" your guest list.. taping the invite to their front door!

An Irish themed menu is easy to prepare. Set the mood for your party with invitations that will give the children a sneak preview of your ghoulish plans, and you'll be assured that no-one will want to miss the fun. As an alternative, consider attaching a computer generated or hand written tag to a flashlight, a ghost pop, a mini witch's hat, or glow bracelet.

Use your imagination! Use curling ribbon, satin ribbon, yarn or pipe cleaners to attach. Some theme suggestions: "Boo Bash", "Boo-Ware: We'll be having a frighteningly good time!", "Monster Bash", "A Ghoulish Gathering", or "Party at the Pumpkin Patch".

Halloween Decorating Ideas:

Table Decorations - Use solid plastic tablecovers in black, orange, green and purple. Use our snack craft ideas to decorate tables.

Costume Contest - Have a costume parade and award prizes for winners in several different catagories.

Monster Paws - Using plastic gloves, purchased at beauty supply stores or the deli counter, stick one piece of candy corn at the tip of each finger. Fill the glove with pre-popped popcorn, and tie with curling ribbon, yarn or with a pipe cleaner. Add a little tag with a message, and the hand can be used as a party invitation, table decoration, or favor.
Cookie Decorating - Provide prebaked sugar cookies (or bake your own in Halloween shapes). Set out colored icing, sprinkles and candy corn for students to decorate their own cookies. This also doubles as a snack!
Pumpkin Painting - Purchase mini pumpkins and provide tempera paints or markers for students to decorate their own pumpkins. This doubles as a party favor!
Face Painting - If your school doesn't allow students to wear costumes to school...have them wear funny hats and recruit someone to paint faces.
Creepy Crawlie Pop - For each pop, you'll need 2 black pipe cleaners, 2 wiggly eyes, 1 Tootsie PopT, and a 4"X4" piece of black foil or black tissue. Wrap the black foil around the sucker, leaving the existing wrapper in place. Cut the black pipe cleaners in half, then center them at the base of the pop and wrap them around the stick, so that there are four legs on each side. Bend the pipe cleaners to resemble legs, then glue wiggly eyes in place. This is an easy craft idea, or a great little favor.
Bugs on a Log - This extra-easy to make treat is a fun activity for little children, and then can be instantly consumed. Ingredients: Pretzel Rods, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Chips. Dip pretzel rod into peanut butter, (about half of the pretzel should be covered), and then roll in chocolate chips. If you are allowing the children to participate, it is easiest to give each of them a plate with their own portion of ingredients on it. They'll enjoy the making as much as the tasty eating!

Halloween Game Ideas

Eyeball Relay - Before the party you will need to purchase at least 12 Ping-Pong balls. Using permanent markers, draw irises, pupils, and bloodshot veins on the balls. Divide your group into two teams. Players race around a specific course with a heaping pile of "eyeballs" (at least six), before handing them off to a teammate. Dropped balls must be retrieved before the handoff. The first team to complete the course wins. (Ages 5 and up-you may want to give players over the age of 12 more eyeballs to carry)
Bobbing for Apples - This simple game, involving a water-filled tub brimming with floating apples, is a timeless, but forgotten favorite. Most of us enjoyed this game as children at school and church functions, and it will still delight children today, as does any game involving water. (Ages 4-12)
Reverse Trick or Treat Game - Give each player a bag or goodie box with 10 pieces of candy in it. Have bags labeled with players' names, so they don't get mixed up. Let players know at the start of the game exactly when the game will be ending-this game can be played throughout an entire party if you so choose. The object of the game is to catch fellow players saying one of the following words: Halloween, Candy, Witch, Party, Ghost, Pumpkin
To help players, post the words prominently on a board where they can be seen often. If someone is caught saying one of the words on the list, that person has to give up a piece of candy from their stash. The player with the biggest haul of candy at the end of the game is the winner! (Ages 7 - 12)
Witch's Brew - Cut ten pieces of paper in Halloween related shapes, such as ghosts, bats, pumpkins, or spiders. The shapes need to be about the size of a RitzT cracker. Place the shapes in a pile beside a small bowl or witch's cauldron. Have straws available for each player, along with a stopwatch, or a watch with a second hand. Using the straw as a vacuum, each contestant tries to pick up the shapes and drop them into the cauldron. The player with the fastest time wins. (Ages 6-12)

Party Treats

TASTY PLACE CARDS - Bake sugar cookies in the shape of rectangles, and let cool. With colored gel or frosting, write the names of party guests on the cookies, and decorate as desired. A miniature SnickersT bar attached with frosting will make the cookie stand. This is a great table decoration, and a nice personal touch for a small group or classroom of children.
FROZEN MONSTER HANDS - Fill plastic or latex gloves with red, purple or green punch, and either knot or fasten the end tightly with a twist-tie. Gloves can be purchased at most beauty supply stores, or deli counters. In a pinch, if you are visiting the doctor's office between now and Halloween, most are willing to spare a few. Place wax paper on a cookie sheet, and place "hands" on the cookie sheet. Freeze. When the hands are frozen solid, carefully use scissors to cut gloves away. Float the monster hands in a cauldron of punch. Your punch should be a different color for maximum fright effect!
CRISPY POP - To make 16 pops, you'll need 1-12 oz. bag of Nestle's TollHouse Chocolate ChipsT, 16 ready made Crispy Treats (or make your own if you have the time-cut into 2 ½" X 4" pieces), 16 pretzel rods, and some Halloween colored sprinkles. Cutting little holes with a knife, stick the pretzel rods into the narrow end of the Crispy Treats. Melt the entire bag of chocolate chips for one minute in the microwave, and stir. Dip the end of the "pop" into the melted chocolate, then sprinkle with festive sprinkles. Set pops on a cookie sheet covered with wax paper, and refrigerate until the chocolate sets. If you will be using these as take home favors, or sending them to school, cover the crispy treat portion with plastic wrap and tie with satin or curling ribbon.
DEAD TREES - With scissors, cut one end of a black or chocolate flavored licorice stick to make the trunk and branches. Push the other end through a hole in the bottom of a peanut butter cup. Use chocolate frosting to cement the tree in place.
BROWNIE SPIDER WEB - Using a 10" tart pan with a removable bottom, or a 12" pizza pan, bake one package of brownie mix according to the directions on the box. After the brownie cools completely, frost with one container of ready-to-spread vanilla frosting. Draw a spiraling circle on the frosted brownie with black gel frosting. Starting in the center of the brownie, "pull" a toothpick out to the edge of the pan to create the web effect. Garnish the web with one of our clip-on crawlie spiders. When you are serving this snack, have enough spiders on hand, so that you can add one to each plate. This same concept works equally well with individual cupcakes.
HAUNTED TREE - Bake and decorate Halloween shaped sugar cookies, such as pumpkins, ghosts or bats. The ready-made Pillsbury Sugar Cookie DoughT can be rolled and used to make cutouts if your time is limited. Put each individual cookie into a little plastic baggie (not zip variety), and tie with orange or black curling ribbon. Find a good-sized tree branch, tie the cookies with curling ribbon to the branches, and you'll have a boo-tiful centerpiece! For a truly special effect, add twinkle lights to the branches before adding the cookies.
RITZY BITZY SPIDERS - RitzT crackers, peanut butter, pretzel sticks and raisins.all you'll need to create these creepy little critters. Spread one cracker with peanut butter. Break four pretzels in half for each spider, and add pretzel "legs" to the first cracker. Spread peanut butter on a second cracker, and place the peanut butter side down on the pretzel legs. Attach raisins with peanut butter, and.eeeek, your spider is ready to be consumed!
WITCH'S BROOMSTICK - For this easy and healthy snack, you will need pretzel sticks, and a block of "orange" cheese. Most children enjoy mild cheddar. Slice cheese so that you are working with a piece that is ½" thick. Using a sharp knife, cut cheese into the shape of the base of a broom. Scrape with a serrated edge to give the appearance of bristles, then add the pretzel stick to the top as the handle. The cheese is so easy to cut with cookie cutters-try cutting out little pumpkin shapes and bats too!
SEVERED FINGERS - Using peanut butter as "glue", attach a slivered almond to the tip of an uncooked baby carrot
SANDWITCH CUTOUTS - Make sandwiches using favorite ingredients, and cutout full-sized Halloween cookie cutter shapes. For ghost shapes, use white bread, and add raisin eyes. For bats, witch hats or monsters, try pumpernickel. Green olives, little pieces of carrots, or chocolate chips make gruesomely good eyes.

How to Plan a Toy Story Birthday Party

I just could not imagine sleeping well at night after seeing the crestfallen look on my kid's face when I told him that a Toy Story Birthday Party was out of the question. My immediate thoughts were about the possible expense and logistics of toy story party supplies but then I just found it hard to get that look on his face out of my mind so I decided to explore the idea and guess what? It was by far easier and cheaper than I ever imagined. The summary is; he got the toy story cake and party he wanted and it rocked! Just ask the kids in the neighborhood. If your kid ever asks for a TS woody birthday party, here is how to go about planning one.

First, you definitely need to familiarize yourself with the story in order to get the things right. I recommend grabbing of the movie, Parts 1 & 2. The first was released in 1995 while the second in 2009 in 3D. This will get you acquainted with the various characters; Woody the cowboy, Buzz Lightyear, "RC" Racecar & co. again, by watching the movie, you will be able to get a good idea of the theme in terms of pictures, decorations and even gifts.

You then have to break the party down into segments according to your toy story party ideas; the invitation cards, the party decorations that will adorn the venue, the food (including the cake and drinks etc), the party games, the gifts and then any other fillers.

After getting the segments right, it will be time to plan each of the segments to fit into the general theme. I always advise a two character theme in order to minimize costs. Of course, these will the two most popular characters; Woody and Buzz Lightyear. If however, you have a very large budget for the toy story movie party supplies, you can always expand the number of characters to add more spice to the birthday party.
Now, it is time to get your party supplies. Starting with the invitation, you have to shop for online printers. This will allow you design your own birthday cards and the send them the design to print and deliver. Carry out your research for the one that offers the most convenient option at the best costs. Getting a Toy Story cake may be less trouble and even if it is not available, any space or cowboy cake theme will serve pretty well.

Visit the nearby costume shop to get various costumes for your kid. Make sure you also get balloons and other decorations that have the Toy Story theme. Gifts are also available online or in neighborhood shops, just make sure that they are spaceship and/or cowboy themed to coincide with the party theme. Plan games based on the general Toy Story such as gift hunts, races, hide and seek. The kids cannot help having fun in a Disney toy story birthday party!

Balloons and streamers...the basic decorating stand-bys...are always an inexpensive and easy way to decorate. Attach black and red streamers from center of ceiling to each corner of the room. Use two colors and twist streamers for effect. Or...attach short streamers to doorways or down walls. Use plenty of black, brown, and red balloons. Tie in bunches of 3 around room. Don't forget to have a Twilight soundtrack playing in the background. Keep the lighting low.

Discover how to make incredible edible centerpieces to create the focal point for your tables. All it takes is a little imagination and a flair for the colorful to satisfy both the eye and the stomach.

HEIGHT

The goal of any centerpiece is for it to be the focal point and to be noticed and the same holds true for the edible centerpieces. There are no hard and fast rules as to how tall or wide it should be, factor your dimensions to coincide with the size of your table. Ultimately, you want the splendor of it all to draw your eye from across the room.

COLOR

Coordinate your edible centerpieces as you would your clothing. Select a variety of food colors that compliment one another. If you are looking for something a little more subdued, then go with one color and strive for a monochromatic look.

FRUIT CENTERPIECES

Because of the variety of color that fruits offer, they are perfect for creating fruit bouquets.
For example, to make a pineapple flower, cut a fresh pineapple into 1/2" thick slices. Using a flower-shaped cookie-cutter, cut out flower shapes from your pineapple slices. Then using a melon ball, scoop out cantaloupe balls and cut each ball in half and place one-half in the center of your pineapple flower. Run a bamboo skewer through the center of the pineapple and cantaloupe ball, but don't allow the skewer to stick out of the cantaloupe.
Place 6-8 grapes on a skewers and 1 strawberry per skewer with the pointy party facing up.

Select your container, add floral foam, and proceed to arrange your fruit flowers into a bouquet. Cut or break off portions of the skewers to adjust the height, as you would do when arranging flowers. To hide your skewers and fill in the blanks, insert twigs of parsley.

To please the chocolate lovers in your life, you'll want to consider making chocolate centerpieces. There's just something about placing chocolate on a table that adds a professional touch, along with a certain elegant flair.

CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRIES

Wash and dry 15-20 large strawberries, but don't remove the leaves. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Melt 6-oz of semi-sweet chocolate and 1 tbsp. of butter in a double boiler. In a separate pan, melt 2-oz. of white chocolate.
Hold the strawberry by the leaves, dip it into the semi-sweet chocolate and lay it on the wax paper to dry. Drizzle white chocolate on top of the dark chocolate. Refrigerate until firm or overnight. Arrange the chocolate strawberries on a decorative platter or on top of a white paper doily

CHOCOLATE-COVERED PRETZELS

Melt 6-oz of semi-sweet chocolate and 1 tbsp. of butter in a narrow, but deep microwave-safe dish. Use the long, thick pretzels and coat them 3/4 of the way up in the semi-sweet chocolate. Lay on wax paper. chill or freeze until set. Serve them into a basket that is lined with a decorative napkin.

Edible centerpieces are guaranteed to wow your guests. Make their presentation spectacular and you will automatically increase their taste-factor by leaps and bounds.

Invitations:
To create a feel for your jungle theme, invitations are always the first glance into the party. By selecting artistic invitations, this can turn the minds of the kids into thinking of the jungle before they even get to the party. Wondering what that perfect invitation could be? If you're a creative thinker you might consider a ticket into the wild, or a passport that permits the child invited to come to a wild jungle safari. If you just don't have the time or energy there are also great jungle themed cards you can buy. Maybe you might consider a little stuffed lion or monkey to go along with the invitation.

Fun Decorations:
The entry should be the grand access entering the jungle. You want your guests to have a feeling like they are arriving at the jungle itself. By hanging brown and green streamers, it can appear like vines hanging in the jungle. Something like a monkey hanging from the ceiling, with a few colorful flowers or balloons can really set the mood. Coming into the main room, a personalized safari or jungle banner is an excellent idea. It is hard to plan a party for someone who is turning 60. For one, he's already had 59 birthday themes, so there's a slim chance of not repeating a theme from his previous birthdays. Secondly, the celebrant might not like celebrating his birthday party in the first place, as it reminds him of how "old" he is. However, these should not discourage you from planning the perfect birthday party for that special person. Here are some 60th birthday party themes that your celebrant will surely like.

One way of creating a theme is to think of the thing that he or she is most associated to, the first thing that comes to mind when his or her name is mentioned. It can be a hobby or interest. It can be as diverse as the Super Bowl, the Beatles, quilting, or the color pink.

If you want the party to be a bit formal, you can have a black and white theme, where guests wear black and white outfits. Guests bring old pictures that they have of the celebrant (in black and white, of course), which they will post to a board, forming a collage.

Another theme is Casino night. Set up some poker tables and slot machines, and let waiters serve cocktails and hors d' oeuvres. For a movie enthusiast, you can have a movie premiere theme, where guests dress like movie stars and strut down a red carpet.

If a lady celebrant likes the spa, you can organize a spa theme party. Invite some of her closest female friends, and rent out a room where they can have massages, skin and hair treatments, and a buffet table.

If the celebrant is more of the "fun" type, you can organize a karaoke night theme, where each guest sings her favorite songs. The Academy Awards is generally considered the biggest award show of them all for movies. Many movie lovers like to celebrate that evening with a party in the theme of the award show. Here are ideas how to throw a fun and memorable Oscar Academy Awards Party.

Invitations
First you need to prepare and send out your invitations. To help get your guests in the mood you want to make sure your invitation is adorned with art work that is movie oriented. As suggestions, try pictures of reels of film, movie cameras, names of the top movies or even pictures of the top nominated actors and actresses. If you want to get real creative you can go to a party supply store and often they have invitations that look like reels of film cans.

Decorations
If you can get a long red carpet that your guests can walk across as they come into your home that will be just like the real deal. For additional seating rent directors chairs and space them all throughout the house. Decorate your walls with titles of the movies, and pictures of the nominees. If you can get your hands on some 8 millimeter film, that can be cut in strips and placed all around your party room.

Games
A fun ice breaker game is to place the name of a movie star on the back of each guest when they arrive. Their job is to begin interacting with other guests and try to find out who they are by asking on yes or no questions. As soon as they guess they get to wear their name tag on their front side.
Of course the main attraction will be the awards show itself. But it will be more fun if you have some games that tie into the awards program. It can be lots of fun to have a sample ballot for all the top award categories and pass out to each guest. Have the guests fill their ballot out before the show starts. Give an award out at the end for the guest that gets the most correct.
Another fun game you can play during commercials is to have Academy Award trivia questions ready to go. Ask these at different times. If you have small prizes to give out to the guests with the most correct answers, that will add to the fun.

Food
The Oscar Show can last for several hours so your guests will need food. You can plan a full meal or appetizers, or both. It can be fun to have names for your different dishes or appetizers that are related to the award show.

Drinks
What would a party be without special drinks? Be sure to make up a special drink just for the party and name it something related to Hollywood and the movies. Of course champagne to toast the winners near the end of the show will also add to the excitement.
The main attraction will be shown on television. So make sure your television is ready to go. If you have a big screen TV, that is even better. Make sure the sound system is set and the volume will be appropriate. Have your remote control handy to turn down the commercials so you can play your trivia game when the time is right.

Time is of the essence here, and ideally, give yourself around two months before your party, to start looking. It's not like you can drive down to your local shopping centre and get everything you need! Here's how I found some awesome 80s props. I kid you not, I have found a couple of red hot opportunities for awesome 80s props recently.

First of all, a very good friend of mine who also grew up in the 80s, said she was going to ditch her 80s SP (single play - singles) and LP (long play - albums) to whoever wanted them, as her mum had had a bit of a clean up, from when she moved out over 20 years ago. You may get lucky in a similar scenario to this too.
These are great to scatter around as conversation pieces!

Secondly, I was wasting a bit of time browsing in a an opportunity shop (charity shop), and found so many awesome 80s records (as well as the sexy seventies) for only $1 each. Unless if they catch on that these things are in demand again, you may be lucky too.

Thirdly, as I am building my 80s fashion website, I asked a few work colleagues if they had any original photos of them in 80s gear. Wow! I was totally impressed to hear that they had also plenty of their clothes still from the 80s. Totally cool!

The Rubiks Cube is enjoying a come back. In Australia, this fantastic 80s prop is just under $20, however, I notice it is cheaper online. The wow factor from the people who were really there in the 80s, and those that wish they were, is absolutely priceless. They love having a good old play with it. The Rubiks Cube is a highly recommended purchase for the 80s night.

If you were around as a teenager in the 80s, you would remember something really important. Our bedroom walls were covered in posters from our favourite 80s movie and music stars. Find 4 or 5 posters from the 80s, to kick start your awesome 80s party decor.

If you have a son and he's nine or ten years old, there's a good chance he likes sports. And hey, basketball is a sport, right? So this year, when he turns eleven, why not give him a basketball birthday party theme? I would, if I were you. And clearly, I know a lot: how could I have opened up Microsoft Word and typed these words if I wasn't registered with Mensa.

So here's how we're going to do it: we'll send out all the invitations a few weeks in advance, telling the parents that the party will have a basketball "theme"...hm...should we really call it a theme, or should we just say that we're going to be playing basketball? Let's say "theme"; that way, the parents will at least know that you know that word.

Plus, we're going to try and print off pictures of some of the all-time greats: let's print off some good shots of guys like Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Wilt Chamberlain. So we have a few guys who dominated in the 80s, and then Wilt Chamberlain. Was he in the 60s? Whenever it was, it's a good conversation piece, and you can educate your kids a little on some of the past. (remember to find out when Wilt played before the party!)

Try and set up some lines in front of and around your basketball hoop, just like in "real" basketball. Try and come up with some team names that the kids will think are funny. A really cool thing would be if you could find a referee shirt and wear it as you greet the adults at the door. They'll really get a feel for what the party is about.

Then when it comes time for playing the actual game, grab that whistle and BE the referee. Maybe your house can be the official place to play on the block!

The Winter Olympic Games are coming to Vancouver in February 2010, and everyone is gearing up for the fun. Instead of just sitting in front of the television and passively watching, why not make it a fun family and friends event? Here are some ideas for party foods, games and decorations to make your Winter Olympic Games party a gold medal winner.

Invitations: Making invitations can be a fun craft for kids, and helps to build the anticipation. A simple invitation can be made from gold or silver paper (craft or scrapbook supplies). Use a large glass to trace a circle and cut out the 'medal'. On the back, write the date, time and party info and your 'Olympic Village' location. You can staple ribbons onto the medals so guests can wear them around their necks.

Themes: You can have everyone come dressed representing an Olympic Winter Games event or a participating country. An alternative is to put country names in a hat and have everyone draw a name as they come in.

Decorations: You can go for an international village look and decorate the room with flags, posters or memorabilia from different countries. If you have lots of winter sports equipment, spread around some skis, hang some skates and hockey jerseys, etc. You can also make your own decorations (kids love this) by making flags for each country. This fun yet educational art project can be done inexpensively, with large sheets of papers, and markers or poster paint. Finished flags can be displayed on the walls, or participants can put their flags on a stick and march in a 'parade of nations' to Olympic music. If someone is good at face painting, you can also paint small flags on guests' cheeks, or pictures of skis, skates, medals, etc. Guests can also make event passbooks, and record each event with the winner's name, country and time.

Food: Since the Olympics are multi-national, you can have foods from the different countries: German pretzels, Swedish meatballs, French pastries; Swiss fondue; New Zealand kiwis; Italian pizzas, etc. An international cheese tray is also fun, especially if you cut everything in cubes and get the decorative toothpicks with international flags to put on the respective cheeses. For dessert, you can make cupcakes and ice them in the Olympic ring colors, and lay them out like Olympic rings on the tray.

Games: You can organize a fun outdoor party - involving skating, sledding or races in the snow. Make a fun obstacle course, an endurance challenge or silly Olympics. Have extra (craft) medals and podium presentations for the winners. (To be sure everyone has a good time, try to ensure that everyone goes home with at least one medal - even if it is a team sport or an honorary medal).
Other fun indoor games are Olympic trivia or charades. You can also have a 'fun bet' sheet were participants make their guesses for medal counts for each country, or pre-event questions like: who will have best outfits; who will finish last; who will fall, etc.

The Winter Olympics only come around every four years. Use it as a great excuse to get into the spirit and spend some quality time with family and friends.

What will you serve at your Super Bowl Party? Our favorite is Chili Beans! Below is a great chili recipe that's a little different. It's thick and hearty and you can make it as HOT as you want! You can substitute ground beef for chicken and tomato juice for water. Have plenty of salsa, onions, cheese, and totilla chips available to eat along with this chili. This recipe is quick and easy!

Super Bowl Chili (Chipotle Chicken and Rice)

Ingredients:
- 1-1/2 lb. boned, skinned chicken breasts
- 1 - 2 teaspoons Chipotle Seasoning (and/or Chili Powder)
- 1 tablespoon Canola Oil or Olive Oil
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1 medium onion sliced into thin rings
- 1 clove garlic, crushed (or garlic powder)
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup Salsa
- 1 cup Instant Brown Rice
- 1 - 15.50z. can red kidney beans
- 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Directions:
Slice chicken breasts into thin strips. Sprinkle with Chipotle Seasoning, salt, and pepper. In a 10" skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add chicken to pan, seasoning side down, then stir fry until chicken is no longer pink. Add onions and garlic, stir fry for 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup water, 1/2 cup Salsa, and the instant brown rice. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 8 - 10 minutes. Stir in kidney beans, cook for 2 minutes. Sprinkle cheese over top, cover and remove from heat. Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Serve with extra salsa, tortilla chips, and shredded cheddar cheese. Serves 4-6.

Ham & Cheese Tortilla Wrap

- Soft tortillas
- Plain or flavored cream cheese
- Ham slices
- Shredded lettuce or lettuce leaves
- Salsa
Directions:
Spread cream cheese over tortilla. Cover half of the tortilla with ham and lettuce. Spoon on salsa to taste. Roll and enjoy!

Room Decorations
Balloons and streamers...the basic decorating stand-bys...are always an inexpensive and easy way to turn any room into a festive birthday party. Attach streamers from center of ceiling to each corner of the room. Use two colors (green and yellow) and twist streamers for effect. Or...attach short streamers from doorways or down walls. Decorate with a camoflauge metallic balloon, plus plenty of green and yellow balloons. Tie in bunches of 3 around room and/or attach one balloon to the back of each chair at the table. Use extra balloons on the "birthday" chair. Give each child a balloon to take home after the party. If your child has some army figures or toy vehicles, set those around in room for decoration and for kids to play with.

Table Decorations
The easiest way to bring out any party theme is with the paper products for your table. Decorate your table with Army camoflauge theme paper goods for easy clean up. Add plates or napkins in solid colors if desired. Have a few small army trucks around on table. Have a party theme blowout, army helment and loot bag for each child.

3. Red Light - Green Light! - This classic game is great for an army theme party.
4. Pass the Helment! - Play a kids song or army theme song. Have players sit in a circle and pass a child's army helment (or toy) until the music stops. The player left holding the hat when the music stops is out. Keep passing until only one player is left. They get a prize!
5. Pin the Tail on the Donkey - An old favorite at every birthday party.

Combat Makes You Hungry!
Beef Jerky and hard melba toast would be perfect ideas for an army theme party! Also, use these ideas: Serve finger foods that are easy and fun for children and keep it simple. A fun idea that children love is peanut butter and jelly on party rolls. These are just kid sized! Add some small snacks such as cheese bits, potato chips, mini chocolate chip cookies or animal crackers. Serve on Camoflauge theme paper products for easy clean up.
Fun Idea! Pack lunches in a bag, box or backpack so "soldiers" can eat while "on maneuvers". Pack a sandwich (or melba toast and cheese), beef jerky, chips and juice box.

Camo Birthday Cake!
Make your own cake by swirling the top of a chocolate iced cake to look like roads. (make some hills with extra icing.) Sprinkle some cookie crumbs or brown sugar on top to look like dirt or cinnamon sugar to look like sand. Add some small toy army vehicles and men. HO, HO, HOLD YOUR TONGUE - Give each student a bag or stocking with 10 small treasures in it (candy, chocolates, little favors). Have bags labeled with players' names, so they don't get mixed up. The the players know at the start of the game exactly when the game will be ending - this game can be played throughout the entire party if you so choose. The object of the game is catch fellow players saying on of the following words or phrases: SANTA, REINDEER, SNOW, CHRISTMAS, ORNAMENTS, PRESENTS. To help players, prominently post the words on a board where they can see them often. If someone is caught saying one of these words, that person has to give up a treasure from their stash. The player with the biggest haul of goodies at the end of the game is the winner! This game is always a big hit.

RUDOLPH WITH YOUR NOSE SO BRIGHT – Borrowing from the concept of the tried and true game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, we suggest a fun game of "Rudolph with your nose so bright"! Draw an outline of a reindeer on a brown piece of poster board. Use a 2" ball of red Playdough, a construction paper cutout, or a red foam clown nose as Rudolph's nose. Blindfold each participate as his/her turn arrives, spin, point in the right direction, and watch your reindeer light up a wintry night!

SANTA SCRAMBLE – Divide the class into two equal teams. Create two starting lines with masking tape, and place two wrapped packages about 10-15 yards away. Line the teams up with the Santa Clause Suit at the starting line. At the signal to begin, the first player on each team quickly dresses up, runs the course, and then returns the wardrobe to the next player. The first team to complete the course wins. A Santa Hat, oversized T-shirt, pillow for stuffing the tummy, big black boots, and a sack full of toys will lead to holly jolly fun.

FESTIVE FRAMES - Start with simple, inexpensive Acrylic Frames, and add a special border to the outside edge. Consider adding a border of jingle bells, tiny bows made of holiday ribbon, miniature ornaments, fun foam cut into special shapes, or use puffy paint or a gold paint pen to write a Christmas verse or message of thanks around the edge

GINGERBREAD ORNAMENTS - Cut felt in shapes to resemble gingerbread people out of brown felt (trace shapes out of cookie cutters). Decorate with white puffy fabric paint, colorful buttons, and Rickrack. Add a thin red or green ribbon tie to the top with a hot glue gun, and you'll have a delightful gingerbread ornament for the tree, or to use as a gift tag.

SWEET WREATHS - Make wreaths out of peppermints! Begin with a Styrofoam wreath that is at least 2" thick. Using straight pins, attach the wrapper ends of starlight mints (red and white) in a circle around the wreath. (Make sure the children are supervised or have help when using the pins!) Start on the outside edge, and work your way in to the center of the wreath. Add a bright red or green Gossamer Streamer bow.

"HAND-SOME" WREATH - A fun craft and warm memento for parents to cherish! Have children trace one of their hands, and cut out 14-18 copies of it in green construction paper. (Some grown-up help with cutting will be necessary.) Arrange the hands into a wreath like circle, and glue together. Add a red bow, and a few jingle bells.

It's Football season and a great time to throw a party! If you can't go to the game, you can have a Tailgate Party right in your den! This makes for a fun party to watch the game on TV, a Birthday Party, or a Thanksgiving evening party.

A 40th Birthday party is sometimes done with all black as a joke, but I prefer bright colors...or you can mix both.

It's easy to decorate with lots of balloons, streamers, banners. Co-ordinate with a 40th Birthday theme tableware. If you want black, but not all black...use colorful tableware but throw in some black balloons. Or, just the opposite, all black tableware, but colorful balloons.

Instead, you could also use a milestone musical theme such as Disco or Blast From the Past. Hang disco balls and play disco music. Maybe your 40 year old would rather forget what age he or she is! :-)
